I made this ipod / cellphone / gadget case for a friend. It’s shaped like a chibi-fied version of her pet rat, Mimzi. The tail, face and other features are hand-embroidered and it’s fully lined. Kawaii! :3

2010/06 New Kimono Purchases

X3 I just got the best obi ever. It’s black and gold with waves and seashells- it’s in effect a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea obi. X3 I’m thinking about painting my dark violet iromuji to resemble this furisode’s patterns and wearing them together. Photos of the obi:

I also got a bunch of things for less than $2.00 USD apiece from Yamatoku Classic’s Ebay Store. Two yabane patterned komon + a michiyuki that looks a *little* bit like Megumi’s from "Rurouni Kenshin." (I also have an ama michiyuki which looks more like hers- I could easily fold it up and baste it to make it look short enough.) Guess who’s going to have a lot of Meiji-era fun at the next cosplay convention? ;) I also now have the right-colored kimono items to go as Yukishiro Tomoe. :3 I can’t quite decide who to cosplay as yet, but it’s fun to have a lot of options. (And it would have to be a kimono-wearing character, of course. X3 )

Yabane komon like this were often paired with hakama and Western riding boots by Meiji-era schoolgirls. I plan on wearing it that way for a nostalgic look- I love Meiji and Taisho era fashions the best (except for Heian-era, but wearing 20 layers of floor-trailing kimono with giant sleeves is a bit hard for everyday life lol. A zippered lined tote bag / netbook case made for Mom. She loves raccoons (Dad actually nicknamed her “raccoon” long ago) and she uses a lot of tote bags (she’s a teacher, and they have to lug around a scary amount of papers and books) so I made her a raccoon tote bag for Mother’s Day. :)

When it was almost done, she mentioned that it wouldn’t be possible to add a zipper to it- but since I’m kind of annoying that way, her comment cemented my desire to add a zipper to it, just because someone said it was impossible. It was possible- to add a zipper to an already-made bag, you sew one side of the zipper on and the unzip the zipper, then sew on the other side by sticking your hand inside the bag through the open zipper. It’s a useful thing to know, since a lot of tote bags don’t have zippers, so things tend to fall out of them.

The handle/sling is made of ribbon, since Mom prefers this type of handle- it’s more comfortable that canvas handles. The inside is fully lined with a pocket for holding smaller items, and the layer between the outside and the lining is made of craft foam to insulate and protect the contents.

Raccoons are like, one of the cutest animals ever. They’re really smart, too- almost like furry little people. We have some in our neighborhood who started coming on the deck at night to steal Tenchi’s cat food, and it’s really fun to watch their antics. ^^ They’re fluffy, cute little clowns. Raccoons, otters and foxes are my favorite wild animals. (^_^”) (Featured by SnowFoxCreations)

Yes, it’s true- I FINALLY got a bunny yukata in my size. ^^ (Most of them are for kids.) It’s adorable and green and purple and bunny-covered and I love it. I got it from this seller: Ebay : BabyMoti.

I also bought that antique rose-painted Nagoya obi I’ve been eyeing for months. The seller relisted it so many times, and I was a bit concerned that they’d quit relisting it, so… ^^;

I’m thinking that it may be from the time immediately following WWII- I’ve heard reports of kimono/obi being ‘painted’ in this manner since dyeing was too expensive in the post-war economy. The fabric is very thick and luxurious- I *think* that it’s silk, but I’ve never felt anything quite like it. :?

Really, though, I bought it because I love roses and wanted to wear it with this Taisho-era irotomesode. And it would have been JUST PERFECT, but after ordering it, I remembered that Nagoya obi are a bit too informal for tomesode. ^^; Not that anyone in my state would even notice that. TT_TT I live in the middle of a kimono desert… :(

This is another of my favorite temple cat. When I was trying to take a photo of mejiro on the cherry tree, she was there. Next moment she jumped up on the tree and the bird of course flew away. I don’t think she was seriously aiming on the bird. Looks like she just enjoyed surprising it（^ワ^）.

2009 Halloween Kitsuke

SuperWombatchan is on the left, wearing my Taisho era irotomesode + and antique red nagajuban and a Lady Murasaki motif tsuke obi.

I’m the one on the right, wearing a blue-green ofurisode with botan (peony flower) motif and a Taisho era Roman maru obi.

(LOL at our different skin tones- we have the same parents and get the same amount of sunlight, but I inherited all of the Native American traits, while SuperWombatchan could pass as a British person. Genetics are fabulous.)

I tried using padding on myself so that the lines would be more even, but it still didn’t make the kimono folds even and DID make me bloat out so that the obi didn’t fit right, so I think from now on I’ll just skip the padding (it’s not that comfortable, anyway.)

I had lots of problems with obi- mine wouldn’t fold right (it has NO center obi shin, believe it or not- are all antique maru obi like that?) and SuperWombatchan wore a tsuke obi, but I had never tied that particular tsuke obi before, and she was squirming, so I think I tied it too low for someone as young as her- and that really bothered my OCD, so I kept trying to adjust it. :/

She was going to wear her ofurisode, but decided to pick something out of my collection instead.

In the end, Halloween was just another excuse to wear kimono. ^^;

Taisho Era Maru Obi with Western Playing Cards & Botan

X3 Bought from an American seller for $10.00 USD + shipping. No one else bid, and the item was just labeled as being a kimono obi.

It’s a completely reversible maru obi, and the motifs seem to be Taisho Roman (note the Western playing cards on one side.)

I had been needing a maru obi, but they were all so expensive. @_@ Not knowing what else to do, I prayed for one… Hence my $10.00 obi with only local shipping costs.

And it has botan! X3 Yay!!!

Bit by bit, my plans for Taisho-era geisha henshin are coming together. X3 Fwahahaha…

Now I just have to convince the rest of my family to let Baron von Fuzzypants be named Baron von Fuzzypants… ^^; So far, they haven’t been too enthusiastic about his AWESOME name.
